How To Soothe Stomach Upset In Babies?

Your baby got digestive troubles causing him long bouts of crying, discomforts, vomiting, and changes in bowel habits and stool consistency?

Read on to spot simple yet effective tips for handling some of the common tummy upsets among infants:

  • Increase your baby’s tummy time or place him facedown along your forearm, and gently squeeze his abdomen to help release some of the gas trapped inside.
  • Lay your baby on his back and gently rub his abdomen in a circular motion. This kind of massage is very soothing and effective in reducing colic symptoms.
  • Check your baby’s position during breastfeeding and make sure you hold him in an upright position – with his head higher than your breast.
  • Nurse your baby before he cries, so you can prevent excess air from going into his stomach while gulping and fast sucking.
  • Give your baby time to burp during and after breastfeeding. To burp your tot, you can, either place him on your lap with his head higher than the rest of his body, hold him upright on your shoulder or let him sit upright on your lap with your hand under his chin.
  • Make sure your baby’s diaper is not too tight and doesn’t put any pressure on his belly.
  • Nurse your baby at close intervals and in small easy-to-digest quantities.
  • Be careful with your diet while breastfeeding, for some types of food may upset your baby’s tummy, and it’s best to avoid them or minimize them.
  • Move your baby’s legs in a circular motion as if he’s riding a bicycle. This exercise can stimulate his bowel movement and alleviate his gas pain.
  • If you suspect constipation is the cause behind your baby’s discomfort. Try to enrich his diet with pears, plums and green peas that can soften his stools, unlike bananas, apples, rice and carrots.

Digestive discomforts are an integral part of your baby’s overall growth. Don’t worry about them, just be patient, wise and calm when dealing with them and trying to reduce their impact on your life and your baby’s, and don’t hesitate to contact the doctor whenever you feel the need to.
